Montreal, May 30, 2018 – The Aluminium Association of Canada (AAC) is calling on the Government of Canada to act quickly and take the necessary steps to avoid the effects this strike could have on the economy of Quebec and Canada. 

The train conductors’ strike adds major challenges to the operations of aluminium smelters. These plants have to resort to complex and more costly logistical options, given the considerable demand from the overall industrial sector. 

The financial and logistical impact on our operations are significant in an already challenging market environment for our businesses. Currently affected by a series of increased costs and an uncertainty in the market, aluminium is a commodity that does not allow any transfer of additional costs to purchasing customers. It is in this context, and taking into account the intense competition we face in our export markets, that the AAC is asking the government to intervene quickly to avoid the strike.
